Our District Explorer Scout Units

Explorer Scouts is for young people aged 14-1. Being an Explorer is all about discovering the world on your own terms and making the most of what you have, wherever and whoever you are.

Alongside friends, they master the skills that will make them feel stronger and happier in the long run, and try things they’d never get the chance to do at home or at school.

Whether hiking to faraway lands or building a robot in a local town hall, they have the freedom to choose what they’d like to do, and work together with adults to make it happen.

Young Leaders Unit

We also have a Young Leaders Explorer Scout Unit. Explorer Scout Young Leaders (ESYLs) are Explorers who volunteer alongside adult leaders in a Squirrel Drey, Beaver Colony, Cub Pack or Scout Troop. They’re a valuable asset to any leadership team and play an active role in the section, bringing a range of fresh ideas to the table and acting as positive role models for the young people they work alongside.

All Young Leaders in the Squirrel, Beaver, Cub and Scout section who are between the ages of 13.5 and 18 are members of the Young Leaders Unit. Young people from outside Scouting can also participate if they’re working towards their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award or Queen’s Guide Award.

The Explorer Scout Young Leaders’ Scheme (ESYLS) is the learning programme for Young Leaders. It contains 11 modules and 4 missions for them to work through whilst volunteering in their chosen section.

As well as developing valuable life skills, the scheme is an opportunity for Explorers to make a positive impact in their communities and to fulfil the service elements of many of the Top Awards in Scouts, or their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Recognition of achievement is available along the way, and on completion of the Scheme.

This unit meets as-and-when required, usually at our District HQ on The Lanes, Pudsey. If you’re interested in becoming a Young Leader, there are two routes.

  • If you know where you’d like to help, speak to the Section Team at the group (you can find those details on the group’s page)
  • If you don’t have a particular group in mind, contact us and we’ll match you with a group

In either case, we’ll register you with the Young Leaders Unit and help you on your way.
